Eh. An Admirable Attempt. – Kara J Buller –
I really wanted to like this book, but there was something very distant in the author’s voice and in his approach. It might be that the description of the characters and settings didn’t exactly come to life for me (see Mary Karr’s Lit for imho very successful scenes). I will say we do get a protagonist who really, really wants something–pursues it to the ends of the earth and that does help to create a page-turner. There’s a definite narrative engine here–it’s just not moving forward the most graceful and elegant material. You could argue that that’s not what he was going for. He wanted quick, urgent prose that mirrored the experience. Okay, fine. It’s just a little hard to stick with for 240 pages. I commend him for getting his experience out there. It could inspire others to write and/or recover.
